Many Christians struggle spiritually

They know God wants them to bear spiritual fruit, and they would like to be fruitful, but somehow it just doesn’t happen.  Things come up.  Life gets in the way.  They just don’t know what to do.

They want to do good and bear fruit, but they do things that are unproductive or even wrong instead.  The cares of life and the pressure to conform to the world’s ways choke out their good intentions.  As a result, they feel frustrated, guilty, and defeated.  They may even doubt their salvation.

Perhaps you are one of them.

This is a problem for all Christians.  When we trust Jesus Christ as our Savior, the Holy Spirit comes into our lives, gives us spiritual life, and frees us from bondage to sin.  But our bodies are still cursed, corrupted by the fall, slaves to sin.  So there is a constant struggle between our new spiritual life and our old sin nature.

Even the apostle Paul said:

  • For we know that the law is spiritual — but I am unspiritual, sold into slavery to sin.
  • For I don't understand what I am doing.  For I do not do what I want — instead, I do what I hate.
  • But if I do what I don't want, I agree that the law is good.
  • But now it is no longer me doing it, but sin that lives in me.
  • For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh.  For I want to do the good, but I cannot do it.
  • For I do not do the good I want, but I do the very evil I do not want!
  • Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer me doing it but sin that lives in me.
  • So, I find the law that when I want to do good, evil is present with me.
  • For I delight in the law of God in my inner being.
  • But I see a different law in my members waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that is in my members.

  • Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?
  • Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!  So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
  • Romans 7:14-25 (NET)

It is comforting to know that you are not alone in this struggle.

As Paul told the Corinthians:

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” (1 Cor. 10:13 / KJV)

This passage tells us that any trial or temptation we experience is common to mankind.  Many others faced the same problems.  And God has promised to make a way of escape so we can endure it.  Have you found yours?

The lost are spiritually dead.  So there are no spiritual battles being waged within them.   The fact that you care and are struggling is actually a good sign of your salvation.

Perhaps you are now thinking this theology is nice, but how do I win the spiritual war?  What do I need to do to become more spiritually fruitful?
