The Arrival of Baby John

New LifeA friend at work had a baby the other night.  Actually, his wife had the baby at a hospital.  This proud father talked about the coming of his son for months.  After 24 hours of labor, the doctor delivered their 8 lbs. 15 oz. baby boy by C-section.

It was a long hard process that ultimately required surgery, but the mother and baby were fine.  My friend and his wife are putting the ordeal behind them as they rejoice in their newborn son, and come to grips with their new roles as parents.

Dramas like this occur every day, but this one got me thinking.  The miracle of new life never ceases to amaze me.  It reminds me of God’s goodness, His genius, and His creative power.

Through the marvel of modern technology my friend and his wife watched their son grow in the womb for months.  They named him John long before he was born.

This reminds me of what God told the prophet Jeremiah:

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”  (Jeremiah 1:5 – ESV)

God knew each of us before we were born.  He even knew us before He created the world.

Through genetics, John was formed in the image of his parents and will probably look like them.  The Bible says God created us in His image (Genesis 1:26-27).  Unfortunately, that image has been corrupted through sin and the fall.

This drama reminds me of a sad truth.  The sin of Adam and Eve brought pain, suffering, and death into this world.  For her sin, God cursed Eve (and all the women who would come from her) with multiplied pain and sorrow in childbirth (Genesis 3:16).  John’s mommy experienced this pain firsthand.

New LifeThis story had a happy ending, though.  John was born healthy and strong, and his mother quickly recovered her strength.  God allowed mankind to develop modern medical techniques which protect life and reduce suffering.  Caesarean Section provides a means to avoid death and allow new life in childbirth.

This reminds me of God’s mercy, love, and grace.  Despite the curse; despite the pain we sometimes suffer in this life, God provided a way for us to have new life.  We can be born spiritually and receive eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ, and be spared from eternal death.

Welcome to the physical world baby John!  May God bless you and your family.  May you be born a second time to receive eternal, spiritual life.
