How to Pray the Bible Way

What is Prayer?

Prayer is how people talk to God. God delights in the godly prayers of His children who are walking in His ways (Proverbs 15:8). Prayer is a vital part of our Christian experience as we worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). Prayer is an important spiritual discipline as we deny our flesh and make time for our soul to communicate with God our maker (Psalm 95:6).

Through prayer, we praise and worship our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ His Son (Psalm 138:2). Through prayer we express our gratitude to God for all He has given us and done for us (1 Thessalonians 5:18; Psalm 106:1; 118:1;136:1-3). Through prayer we confess our sins and ask God for mercy and forgiveness (1 John 1:9).

Through prayer we pour out our hearts to God, telling Him about our fears, troubles and needs (Psalm 37:39). Through prayer we make our requests known to God (Philippians 4:6). And through prayer, we can intercede with God on behalf of others (James 5:14-16).

How God Speaks to Us

God speaks to us through His Word, the Bible. And the Holy Spirit, who indwells all born again believers in Jesus Christ, works in our hearts. The Holy Spirit helps us to remember God’s Word and understand it (John 14:26).

As God’s children, we need to be sensitive to the leading of His Holy Spirit (Romans 8:1, 14; Galatians 5:16, 25; 6:8). God will not regard the prayers of those who quench the Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19) and indulge their flesh (Psalm 66:18; Ephesians 4:30). Instead, we must always pray in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:18).
