The Bible informs us that God created people in His image (Genesis 1:26-27). Adam and Eve rebelled against God’s one command by eating the forbidden fruit and brought about the curse on the earth, which resulted in toil, suffering, and death.
People have been sinful by nature ever since, but we are still special in God’s eyes. Sin has corrupted it, but we still bear the image of God within us. We are still more than animals, and God considers the taking of human life to be an attack on His image.
Adam and Eve’s first child, Cain, killed his brother Abel, but murder did not stop there. People became increasingly wicked (Genesis 6:5) and the earth was filled with violence (Genesis 6: 11, 13). In response to the increasing corruption and violence, God judged the earth with a global flood in the days of Noah.
Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made He man.
Immediately after the flood, God instituted capital punishment for killing people. God told Noah, “surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made He man.” (Genesis 9:6)
Murder became a capital crime, regardless of the age, or stage of development, of the person whose life was taken. People and nations may change the laws of man, but God’s law, like the law giver Himself (Malachi 3:6a), never changes. God still hates the killing of people.
Numbers 35:33 says that the shedding of innocent human blood defiles the land, “and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.” The failure to cleanse the land by executing those who murder others brings God’s judgment upon the land.
the shedding of innocent human blood defiles the land
Psalm 106:35-43 recounts some of Israel’s sins that brought God’s wrathful judgment upon them.
(they) “were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works. And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them. Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood. Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.
Therefore was the wrath of the LORD kindled against His people, insomuch that He abhorred His own inheritance. And He gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them. Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand. Many times did He deliver them; but they provoked Him with their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity.”
Abortion did not exist in Bible times, but people still murdered babies, sacrificing their infant children to demonic idols. This earned God’s wrath and judgment then. We can be sure that abortion is doing the same today.
God’s wrath is building; judgment is coming.
Every year, America and many other nations of the world sacrifice millions of innocent unborn babies to the sinful idols of sexual immorality, selfishness, and irresponsibility. The mass murder of these innocents is defiling our land and the entire earth with their blood. God’s wrath is building; judgment is coming.
It is time to repent of this disregard for human life through the practice of abortion. It is time to change our laws and plead for God’s mercy.
